AIDA

Updated: 4/2/2020

As many of you are already aware, in compliance with government guidelines, we recently made the difficult decision to postpone our statewide production of Aida. For all of our Virginia Opera family, this was a heartbreaking end to a spectacular 45th anniversary season; never in our 45-year history have we cancelled or postponed the run of a production.

With so much about the coming months still unknown, we have now reached the painful conclusion that it is simply not feasible to remount Aida this year, leaving us no choice but to cancel the production.

A work of Aida’s scope brings together the skills and talents of literally hundreds of gifted individuals: the cast and chorus; the musicians of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra; the dancers of the Richmond Ballet; backstage and lighting crews; costume, wig and makeup artists; and, box office and facilities personnel. All of them have devoted weeks of toil and talent to an endeavor that totals $200,000 in base costs to bring this production to our stages.

Needless to say, the financial and emotional impact of this on our company, our artists and staff is devastating, and, we share your deep disappointment in knowing that it would have been a spectacular production to finish out this 45th anniversary year.

At this difficult moment, we appeal to you for your understanding and your consideration in helping us through these uncharted times by donating your unused Aida ticket back to the Opera. Your generosity…

  • Would provide you with a letter of acknowledgment that may be used as a tax deduction for the value of your ticket(s). If you would like, we would gratefully add your ticket to the pool of tickets we offer at no charge to underserved community members including military veterans and foster care families.
  • Would help us work to regain our financial footing as we open our doors again next season.

We can assure you that we are working diligently to try to bring back our production of Aida in an upcoming season and are also hopeful of providing some special opportunities to thank those who are helping us through this time by donating their tickets.

As we reach out over the next several days, we are asking Aida ticket-holders to complete our online form, contact us by phone (757-347-1906), or email at info@vaopera.org so that we may assist in honoring how those tickets may best be converted in this unprecedented time for us all.

Please know how deeply we appreciate your interest, and your continuing support and patience. Our mission is, and will always be, to engage, entertain, and unite our communities. With your help, we will there to share the excitement as the curtain rises again next fall.
