Aida Cancellation – Updated: 4/30/2020

As you undoubtedly know, in compliance with government guidelines, we made the difficult decision to postpone our 2020 production of Aida. For all of us in the Virginia Opera family, this was a heartbreaking and unprecedented end to a spectacular 45th anniversary season. Never have we postponed an entire run of a production. After days of study and work, and with so much about the coming months still unknown, we were then forced to reach the painful conclusion that remounting Aida this year would simply be impossible; leaving us no choice but to cancel the production entirely.

A work of Aida’s scope brings together the skills and talents of literally hundreds of gifted individuals in weeks of creative toil – the cast and chorus; the musicians of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra; dancers of the Richmond Ballet; backstage and lighting crews; costume, wig and makeup artists; and box office and facilities personnel. Virginia Opera had already invested over $200,000 to bring this production to our stages. Needless to say, the financial and emotional impacts on our company, our artists, and our staff has been devastating.

That is why, at this difficult moment, we appeal to you for your consideration in helping us through these uncharted times though the simple act of donating your unused Aida ticket back to the Opera. Your generosity will provide you with a letter of acknowledgment that may be used as a tax deduction for the value of your ticket.

Should you prefer not to donate your unused ticket(s), we understand and are more than amenable to work with you. Options include credits to future seasons, discounted 2020-2021 season subscriptions, and vouchers for guests. We will also process a refund as available funds allow us to do so. Please contact us to further discuss your options:
