ARTISTIC OPERATIONS COORDINATOR
Job Description: Working alongside the Director of Artistic Operations to provide overall support to the Artistic Department. The Artistic Operations Coordinator will take the lead on planning, procuring, and executing all necessary plans for housing, travel, and touring as well as act as a primary, direct contact for all Artists.
Job Responsibilities:
- Procure and maintain housing for visiting contracts, including mainstage Artists, Directors, Designers, etc.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for visiting artists and additional/secondary point of contact for Artist Agents (as directed), chorus, supers, and others as needed.
- Plan and communicate travel and housing logistics for all visiting contracts.
- Plan and effectively communicate touring needs for the company, including travel, housing, and per-diem allotments for sometimes up to 100+ people at a time.
- Travel with company and transport artists (as needed) on tour.
- Plan and execute company opening weekend parties, as well as the point of contact for Guild-provided tech dinner.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with outside vendors and service providers.
- Field phone calls, emails, and texts promptly (occasionally after-hours).
- Support and assist visiting artists with various needs that can arise throughout the contract period.
- Assist in ensuring that contractual obligations to visiting artists/individuals are met and fulfilled.
- Provide administrative support to performances/Artistic Department as needed, including drafting contracts and tracking contract materials.
- Under the supervision of Director of Artistic Operations, maintain, track, and plan housing, travel, and touring budget (and to a lesser extent, the Artistic budget) and assist with future Artistic budget planning.
- Assist in providing logistical support for the Herndon Foundation Emerging Artists Program.
- Coordinate and manage per diem calculations for artists, crew, and staff.
- Process payments and reimbursements related to artistic operations; ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Must be willing and able to perform all other job duties and assignments as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in Company Management, Stage Management, or Arts Administration
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Intermediate or Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (esp. Outlook, Word, and Excel)
- Ability to systematically track and organize information
- Some experience with budgets is a plus
- Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; ability to drive Company transit van (or willingness to learn)
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends; some travel and nights away from home (within Virginia) required

DRAPER
Position Overview
Qualified candidates should exhibit attention to detail and be able to prioritize and execute tasks accurately in a fast-paced work environment. Applicant must have good communication skills and the ability to work with designers, singers, and other shop staff.
Job Responsibilities
- Flat pattern making & draping for 3-show opera season, to also include a scenes program and children’s show
- Instruct others in tools, materials, techniques, and practices
- Availability to work evenings and weekends during heavy build & tech periods
Qualifications
- Previous theatrical costume experience required
- Working knowledge of costume & fashion history
- Knowledge & experience in a variety of costume construction techniques & materials
- Experience with domestic & industrial sewing machines & sergers
- Expert in alterations
- Proficient in hand sewing

Virginia Opera regularly seeks talent from the local area for the chorus, dancers, supernumeraries, and actors for our mainstage productions.
Herndon Foundation Emerging Artists Program
Applications for auditions for the 2026-2027 season are closed. Applications will open for the 2027-2028 season in late summer 2026 on YAP Tracker.

ABOUT THE VIRGINIA OPERA CHILDREN’S CHORUS
All children’s chorus rehearsals take place in Norfolk, VA, at the Harrison Opera House. Typical child choristers live in the Hampton Roads area. The number of rehearsal hours required varies by production, but children can expect to spend approximately two months on a production from first rehearsal to final performance. Performances are presented in Norfolk, Richmond, and Fairfax.

Rehearsals and Performances
All rehearsals take place in Norfolk, VA at the Harrison Opera House. Individuals who live primarily in the Hampton Roads region, but additionally in the Eastern Shore, Eastern North Carolina, and Richmond areas are encouraged to submit their information. The number of rehearsal hours required varies by production, but individuals can expect to spend approximately 6-8 weeks on a production from first rehearsal to final performance. Performances are presented in Norfolk, Richmond, and Fairfax.
Compensation
Virginia Opera is a professional company and all roles are compensated. Transportation and lodging are provided as appropriate for the Richmond and Fairfax performances.
All agreements will be non-Equity, non-AGMA contracts.
*Supernumerary or “super” roles are non-singing, non-speaking roles of all ages, much like extras in film and television. Supers can play soldiers, townspeople, nuns, gypsies as well as many other important roles. Supers will share the stage with internationally-renowned artists and work with celebrated directors and conductors. A super’s enthusiasm and cooperation is an important part of any operatic production. No experience is necessary.
