Virginia Opera
Virginia Opera will present The Magic Marksman (Der Freischütz)by Carl Maria von Weber at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax, Virginia on February 4 & 5. The company’s production places the characters in a rural southern American village of German immigrants.
Tenor Corey Bix will sing the role of Max, the young forester who vies for the hand of Agathe, sung by soprano, Kara Shay Thomson. Internationally-acclaimed Stage Director, Stephen Lawless, who directed the company’s Falstaff in 2013 and Salome in 2015, will return to direct this new production. The company’s Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Adam Turner, will lead the Virginia Symphony in this production.
The opera has been called “an unparalleled masterpiece of the German-language repertoire, representing an operatic landmark that inspired later achievements of German Romanticism.” The opera will be performed in English with English supertitles for heightened clarity.
