Vivian Hamilton

Vivian Hamilton is Chancellor Professor of Law at William & Mary Law School and founding Director of the William & Mary Center for Racial & Social Justice. She also serves as President of the ACLU-VA Board of Directors. At William & Mary, she teaches courses in Federal Civil Procedure, Education Law, Family Law, Gender and Law, and Race and Law.

Her research focuses on the rights of adolescents, educational equity, and race. Her articles have been cited by numerous federal courts, and she regularly testifies as an expert before state legislatures.

Professor Hamilton has been elected to the American Bar Foundation and American Law Institute. She is former Chair of the Section on Family and Juvenile Law of the Association of American Law Schools.

Professor Hamilton earned her B.A. in History from Yale College and is a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School. She is the first-generation daughter of an undocumented immigrant mother and Black father.
