Virginia Opera Announces Departure of Peggy Kriha Miller, General Director & CEO, in 2025

Hampton Roads, Richmond, Fairfax, VA (May 24, 2024) – Virginia Opera today announced the forthcoming departure in 2025 of Peggy Kriha Miller, General Director & CEO.

Miller joined Virginia Opera during a challenging period marked by the global pandemic, demonstrating remarkable leadership and dedication throughout her tenure. Under her guidance, Virginia Opera continued to uphold its mission of providing enriching opera experiences to communities across the Commonwealth, while also navigating unprecedented circumstances with resilience and creativity.

Miller’s accomplishments include a renewed Strategic Plan, an emphasis on equity and inclusion, a re-brand, and the continuation of Virginia Opera’s longstanding artistic excellence.  Her departure will coincide with the conclusion of Loving v. Virginia, a newly commissioned opera to be premiered as part of the 2024-2025 50th Anniversary Season.

Reflecting on her time with Virginia Opera, Peggy Kriha Miller expressed her gratitude, stating, “It has been an honor to lead Virginia Opera during such a pivotal moment in its history. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together, particularly amidst the unique challenges presented by the pandemic. As I transition into the eventual next chapter of my professional life and the prioritization of my family, I am deeply grateful for the support of the Virginia Opera community and look forward to seeing the company thrive in the years to come.”

Mike Lott, Chair of the Virginia Opera Board of Directors, praised Miller’s contributions, saying, “Peggy’s leadership has been instrumental in guiding Virginia Opera through a period of significant transformation. Her passion for the arts, coupled with her strategic vision and commitment to excellence, has positioned the company for continued success. While we are saddened by her departure, we understand and respect her decision to prioritize her family. Virginia Opera has started a nationwide search for Miller’s successor. The Board of Directors will work closely with Miller and the executive team to ensure a seamless transition and the continuation of Virginia Opera’s productions and mission-driven initiatives.
