Alexander Kapp

Alexander Kapp, originally from Louisville, Kentucky, is quickly establishing himself as a young baritone of note. Currently based in Bloomington, Indiana, he is pursuing a doctoral degree at the Indiana University – Jacobs School of Music. This past summer, he returned to Central City Opera as a Bonfils-Stanton Apprentice Artist where he performed the roles of Pops / The Padua Priest in Kiss Me Kate, and Mercutio in their Young Artist Matinee performance of Roméo et Juliette. Previously, he was a member of the Studio Artist program with Central City Opera, where he covered the role of Manfred Lewin in the regional premiere of Jake Heggie’s Two Remain, in addition to performing in their studio artist concerts and Lunch and a Song Recital Series. Other recent highlights include Dr. Pangloss/Martin in Candide and Ottone in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, both with IU Opera Theater.

Alexander has also been a Vocal Institute Fellow with the Music Academy of the West under the direction of Marilyn Horne. While there, he performed in their scenes concerts as well as the role of Thomas in their west-coast premiere production of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain. He has also performed the roles of Ford (Falstaff) and Dottore Malatesta (Don Pasquale), both with UC-CCM Opera Workshop and Summer Opera respectively, as well as Top (The Tender Land), Le Podestat (Le Docteur Miracle), and Bartley (Riders to the Sea) with UofL Opera Theater, among others. In competition, Alexander has been a finalist in the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra Competition (2023) and the Opera Grand Rapids Vocal Competition (2020),  a semi-finalist in the Opera Index Vocal Competition (2022), and was also named an encouragement award winner from the Middle/East Tennessee District of the 2020 Laffont Competition.

Alexander holds a M.M. degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Cincinnati, OH, and his B.M. degrees in both Vocal Performance and Music Education from the University of Louisville in Louisville, KY.
