Helen Aberger

Helen Aberger is a director and intimacy choreographer known for her vibrant energy, sharp wit, and deep empathy. Her passion for the arts is rooted in the strong belief of the power of community and the importance of fostering open, creative, and safe working environments.

Originally hailing from New Jersey, Helen’s journey began in high school, acting and dancing for local opera productions. At the University of Miami, she honed her musical talents playing oboe at the Frost School of Music; and completed a minor in English, which enriched her understanding of narrative and storytelling. Post-graduation and well into a career in arts administration, she became a stage director specializing in operetta (specifically the works of Gilbert & Sullivan) and more recently, an intimacy professional for live theater.

As a director, Helen has helmed a range of productions across various styles and genres. Her recent work includes the 2023-24 touring education production of Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World at Virginia Opera, the timeless H.M.S. Pinafore with Victorian Lyric Opera Company, and Proving Up with University of Maryland’s M.A. Opera Studio. She is pleased to return to Virginia Opera as director for the 2024-25 education touring show A Loving Community as well as serving as the mainstage Assistant Director for Don Giovanni, Carmen, and Cosi fan Tutte.

As an intimacy choreographer, Helen works at the forefront of consent-based, authentic physical storytelling. Her contributions to Lend Me A Soprano at Olney Theatre Center and The Rocky Horror Show at Iron Crow Theatre exemplify her skill in crafting moments of vulnerability and connection. She has choreographed intimacy for over 30 productions, working with high school, college, amateur/community, and professional Equity actors.
