New York City based stage director Richard Gammon is known for the use of modern dance and movement in his contemporary interpretations of classic operatic repertoire and theatre.
Richard directed the world premieres of Jorge Sosa’s electronic opera The Lake (ArtSounds) and liturgical drama Tonantzin (UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance); the American premiere of Scarlatti’s Erminia at the Kennedy Center (Opera Lafayette), the East Coast premiere of Jack Perla’s An American Dream (Opera Maine* Studio Artist Program), the NYC premiere of Jake Heggie’s At the Statue of Venus (Opera Avanti); Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda with lutenist Thomas Dunford at the Kennedy Center (Opera Lafayette) which was named one of the “Top Ten Performances in 2017” by Washington Classical Review; Hindemith’s Sancta Susanna and Rorem’s Three Sisters who are Not Sisters (Manhattan School of Music); Susannah (Charlottesville Opera*); Trouble in Tahiti, The Medium, and a site-specific production of Gianni Schicchi at SPACE Gallery (Opera Maine* SAP); Andy Monroe’s The Life and Times of Joe Jefferson BenjaminBlow at NYC’s Theatre 315 (National Asian Artists Project), La traviata, Sweeney Todd, and Così fan tutte (University of Kentucky Opera Theatre); Ward’s Roman Fever and Hilliard and Boresi’s The FilthyHabit (Carnegie Mellon University); Dido and Aeneas (Morningside College), and a warehouse production of La bohème at Work | Release (Virginia Opera’s Emerging Artist Program). For Kentucky Shakespeare Festival’s 50th Anniversary season he directed Much Ado About Nothing (Globe Players) after having previously directed The Tempest (Sizzlin’ Shakespeare). He directed the workshop of J Ashley Miller’s brutalist pop opera Echosis with Atemporchestra in Kansas City. And for Cleveland Play House’s CARE MonologueProject (film) Richard directed monologues written by Rajiv Joseph, Lloyd Suh, Karen Zacarias, Tanya Saracho, and Matthew Lopez.
Richard is the Director of Opera Maine’s Studio Artist Program and has worked extensively with Young Artist Programs around the country. For Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ 2017 and 2016 seasons Richard co-directed Center Stage, a concert of opera scenes featuring the Gerdine Young Artists and Richard Gaddes Festival Artists with the St. Louis Symphony. Richard was the stage director for the Charlottesville Opera Young Artist Program for four seasons (Il barbiere di Siviglia, Susannah, La bohème, Gianni Schicchi); a Directing Fellow at Wolf Trap Opera directing the Wolf Trap Opera Studio in An Evening of One Act Operas: Hin und züruck, Gallantry, A Hand of Bridge, La Divina, Again; and a Young Artist Director at Opera North.
Other creative positions include Creative Associate for the world premiere of Dream’d in a dream with Seán Curran Company (BAM Next Wave Festival 2015), Resident Assistant Director at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (2016-2018), a 2017 Resident at the Institute for American Art with composer J Ashley Miller, and an Assistant Director at LA Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Wolf Trap Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Palm Beach Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Virginia Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Charlottesville Opera, Opera North, and Opera Maine.
Upcoming engagements include Madama Butterfly (Virginia Opera), Three Decembers (Opera Maine Studio Artist Program), Trouble in Tahiti (Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival), Silent Night (University of Kentucky Opera Theatre); and a 2018 Residency at Hewnoaks Artist Colony.
Richard is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance.
