Derek Taylor Biography


Derek TaylorHailed for his “ringing top” and “blazing good looks,” American tenor, Derek Taylor has garnered wide praise for his appearances in the United States and Europe.  Career highlights include Cavaradossi in Tosca,  Jacopo in I Due Foscari, Enzo Grimaldi in La Gioconda, Hagenbach in La Wally, Il Duca in Rigoletto, Gustavo in Un Ballo in Maschera, Foresto in Attila, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor and Ruggero in La Rondine. Mr. Taylor has also been lauded for his portrayal of Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and frequently appeared as Rodolfo in La Bohème.

Highlights of the 2016-17 season include Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly for his house debut with Oper Leipzig, Macduff in Macbeth with New Orleans Opera, a return to St. Gallen for Cavaradossi and Walter in Catalani’s Loreley, and a role debut as Calaf in Turandot with Virginia Opera.

2015-16 saw Mr. Taylor as Cavardossi in Tosca, Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth, Rodrigue in Le Cid with Theater und Konzert, St. Gallen.  He also debuts with Musiktheater im Revier as Cavaradossi and returns for Enzo Grimaldo in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda.

A natural fit for French grand opera, Mr. Taylor has sung the title roles in Faust and Les Contes d’Hoffmann, as well as Des Grieux in Massenet’s Manon. He has recently garnered huge success with Don José in Carmen.

Past credits have also included Antonio in the American premiere of Thomas Ades’ The Tempest with Santa Fe Opera, Zamoro in Alzira in St. Gallen, Michele in The Saint of Bleecker Street, with Central City Opera, Cassio in Verdi’s Otello with LA Opera, Narraboth in Salome, Alfredo in La Traviata, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, and Camille in Die Lustige Witwe.  He has appeared with Theater St. Gallen, Theater Basel, Theater Würzburg, Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, Theater Mönchengladbach, Los Angeles Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Baltimore Opera, Hawaii Opera Theater, Virginia Opera, Central City Opera, Manitoba Opera, and The Santa Fe Opera, among others.
