Audition call for young people to be part of the children’s chorus in Virginia Opera’s upcoming production of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, as part of our 2018-2019 mainstage season. The children will perform alongside international opera singers, in a fully staged and costumed production, with orchestra and sung in English at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, Dominion Energy Center in Richmond, and George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax.
Young people (male and female) aged 7-12* may audition (*must still be under 12 years of age through mid-October ’18)
We’re looking for children that *look* and *act* like children!
Two roles will be cast, in addition to 6-8 chorus members:
Willie Maurrant (young Caucasian male)
Grace Davis (young African American female)
The auditions take the form of a 45-minute group singing audition, along with solo-singing and vocalization (a simple song like Happy Birthday). If under consideration for one of the two named roles, children should also be prepared to do a dialogue reading.
Previous singing and acting experience is preferred, but not required. Please wear comfortable clothing, and arrive 5 minutes prior to your audition slot (times will be given following your submitted application)
Being part of the chorus requires a strong commitment from both child and parent. It is expected for the child to attend all rehearsals and performances:
Music Rehearsals will begin the week of Aug 20, Staging Rehearsals will begin the week of Sep 3, and further rehearsal details will be forthcoming.
Norfolk-Harrison Opera House: Sept 28, Sept 30, Oct 2
