Virginia Opera Unveils Salome: Sex, Violence and a Mesmerizing Score

January 16, 2015 – Virginia Opera, The Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia, continues to celebrate its 40th Anniversary Season with a production of Richard Strauss’ sizzling opera in one act, the tour-de-force “Salome.” With a cast of internationally recognized opera stars, performing some of the most challenging and stunning music known in the field, this production highlights the drama of the story, taking it to an even higher dramatic level with its significant score.  Returning Director Stephen Lawless (Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago) breathes lightning-charged energy into this work, as he did last season with Virginia Opera’s “Falstaff.”  In developing “SalomeStrauss followed the scintillating Oscar Wilde play based on the Old Testament story,which when premiered in 1905, shocked audiences by themes that caused the show to be censored and banned for decades. Today, modern patrons will not be shaken by this blockbuster storyline similar to any current Hollywood screenplay, juxtaposed against Strauss’ rich score, laden with Middle Eastern flavors and exhibiting a complexity far beyond its days.

Virginia Opera Receives Virginia Tourism Corporation Grant for Tourism Marketing: Virginia is for Opera Lovers

RICHMOND, Va. (October 15, 2014) Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that Virginia Opera received $50,000 from the Virginia Tourism Corporation Marketing Leverage Program grant fund. In total VTC awarded more than $852,000 for 46 tourism marketing projects across the state to help increase visitation and revenue for Virginia’s localities through tourism.

With Director Sam Helfrich, known to Virginia Opera audiences for his recent highly acclaimed productions of "Orphée" (2011-12) and "A Streetcar Named Desire" (2012-13), Helfrich brings his signature style to this comic tour de force that will leave you laughing in the aisles. With Conductor Garrett Keast in his company debut, bringing his mastery of German Opera for our audiences to enjoy, and Andrew Lieberman's sets, whose set design for "Orphée" wowed audiences two years ago, this production plays the perfect host to the comic action.
