Review: ‘Romeo and Juliet’ at Virginia Opera

DC Metro Theatre Arts

Few stories have been as revised, re-told and reconstructed as Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. But a rendition that is not as performed as it should be is the 19th century opera by French Romantic composer Charles Gounod. Luckily for local audiences, Virginia Opera Company has staged a visually sumptuous and vocally stellar production of Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet that proves exactly why this timeless tragedy is so, well, timeless.

La Bohème FAIRFAX, VA Virginia Opera 11/14/15

VIRGINIA OPERA'S NOVEMBER 14 performance of La Bohème at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts—dedicated to the memory of victims of the terror attacks that had occurred the night before in Paris—could not help but give one pause. To see Parisians enjoying cafe nightlife in Act II underlined in an all-too-relevant way the fragility of life; the sight of uniformed characters searching bags carried by workers arriving at the start of Act III likewise took on an eerie layer of significance.

QUEERY: Andrew McLaughlin

Andrew McLaughlin is thriving in his field of opera.

“I am fascinated by opera’s ability to synthesize so many art forms,” says the Canton, Pa., native. “By integrating singing with theater, dance and symphony, we’re able to tell stories in an incredible, and in my opinion, the most spectacular way.”

McLaughlin, a baritone, has been singing professionally since 2011. He plays Gregorio in Virginia Opera’s production of “Romeo et Juliette” by Charles Gounod, a production he says is full of elaborate costumes, has a stellar cast and is “quite musically rich.”
