About In-School Touring
With its music, theatrics, spectacle and humor, opera has everything people love. That is why year after year, community members and educators who experience Virginia Opera’s programs beg for more. This year Virginia Opera brings new and exciting adventures and opportunities to the community.
(Click here for a list of performance titles!)
We also offer programs for schools and organizations that like to partner with each other, such as our Community Programs and our Kids-In-Mass program. We also have special offerings for middle schools and high schools so don’t forget to check out our Encore, Master Classes and Opera & Broadway programs.
Last year our professional casts and staff sang, danced and educated their way into the hearts of over 150,000 children and adults across the Commonwealth. Virginia Opera continually offers audiences a chance to experience performances and learn more about opera in ways that they could have only imagined – don’t let these opportunities pass you by.
Free Study Guides
Each touring program has a free study guide to help prepare for the performance. This valuable tool includes several age-appropriate student worksheets that assist teachers in tying the arts into your school's curriculum and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Following each performance, we provide an innovative question and answer period featuring singers sharing information and interacting with students in an up-close and personal manner. Study guides can be downloaded online here at www.vaopera.org/studyguide.

Tales from the Brothers Grimm
Appropriate for Grades K-5 & Community
October 2010 through December 2010
This 45-minute production features three of the lighter stories from the galaxy of Grimm’s fairy tales, providing a humorous and fast-paced introduction to opera for younger children. In Dr. Know-It-All, a would-be doctor is advised that medical training is over-rated and all he needs to open his practice are doctor’s clothes and a stethoscope. When a truly sick patient arrives, both “doctor” and patient end up learning some important lessons about nutrition and exercise. Rumplestiltskin’s New Adventure depicts the famous troll as he’s preparing for an encounter with yet another maiden needing his help. This time, he’s determined to keep his name a secret! The show concludes with Cat and Mouse Together. These two natural enemies seem to have found the secret to living together.
