Stories They Know…Operas They’ll Love!

Virginia Opera’s In-School Touring programs are specifically designed to bring children all that opera has to offer, in a compact experience that is fun and engaging, customizable to any classroom, auditorium, or community setting. Each program is approximately 40 minutes in length, featuring performers from Virginia Opera’s Herndon Foundation Emerging Artists Program in productions that are fully staged, complete with costumes, scenery, and props.

Age-appropriate programs like these enhance students’ learning in music, fine and performing arts, as well as other key subject areas, while building greater cultural awareness. Each contains multiple tie-ins to the Virginia Standards of Learning, and is accompanied by a free study guide that equips parents and educators with lessons and activities. Children are further invited to interact with performers through a post-performance Q&A.

The Three Little Pigs
Music by W.A. Mozart / Words & Story Adaptation by John Davies

Touring January 2017 - April 2017

Appropriate Audience: Grades K-5, Community

This universal classic and its timeless characters provide the perfect backdrop for this pastiche opera, brilliantly interwoven with scenes by Mozart. According to John Davies, “The Three Little Pigs has been produced with regularity in the USA since 1991. It gives me real satisfaction to think that many excellent American singers having wonderful operatic careers today used to be big bad wolves and little piglets.”
